At the end of 2017 the first phase of construction was completed at the Premium Mobile Kuntz GmbH car dealership in Gettorf. Around 600 square metres of artificial stone were given a new floor covering. For the tiling to withstand the high loads of Maseratis, Alfa Romeos, etc., the reinforcement and decoupling mat PROSECUREfibretec 2.0 was laid by Proline.
Established for 40 years, the family-run company Premium Mobile Kuntz in Gettorf near Kiel is one of the oldest Jaguar dealerships in Germany. What started with the traditional British brand, continued a few years later with the off-road vehicles from Land Rover. In the meantime the exclusive Italian brands of Alfa Romeo and Maserati have also become part of the sporty portfolio. The current models are presented and offered to potential buyers in separate high quality showrooms.
Car manufacturers essentially place great importance on a uniform brand image. The showrooms and sales areas of the dealerships also have to fulfil certain criteria. One of these is the floor covering, which had to be completely renewed in the course of the conversion work in Gettorf. “We renovated two areas of around 300 square metres here”, explains the master tiler carrying out the work, Frank-Dieter Giske. “One display area for Maserati and the second for Alfa Romeo.”
In the run-up to the modernisation, the owner of the car dealership approached the local craft workshop and asked them to provide a quotation for the new floor including the design concept. “The difficulty for us was that we were not dealing with large installation heights, which meant we had to lay as thinly as possible on the existing Rhyolite floor”, explains Frank-Dieter Giske.
Many years of experience with sealing and decoupling systems
“As I’ve already worked with the company PROLINE for many years, I approached the applications engineer Sven Hundertmark from PROLINE; he is also a master tiler, and we discussed the circumstances on-site at the dealership”, says Giske. “We then jointly worked out a design for the floor to be renovated.”
The solution was such that the existing floor did not have to ripped out but could be retained. The renovation was ultimately carried out in several stages of work. The old floor consists of individual Rhyolite and concrete stone slabs in 30/30 cm format. The old floor was essentially intact but had become unsightly from many years of use. “There are nearly always hairline cracks when laying this subsurface in the bed of mortar”, says Giske. In the areas where the cracks were larger than 0.5 mm, undulating connecting clamps were placed in the floor and the cracks were then filled with cast resin and joined firmly. “PROSECUREfibretec 2.0 is the best solution for bridging cracks that are no larger than 0.5 mm and which do not demonstrate any height offset.”
In the next phase of work, the existing floor was fully sanded and then primed. Thanks to the unique composition of PROSECUREfibretec 2.0, the sealing and decoupling system could simply be rolled out on the floor and directly cut off accordingly. Then the entire surface was laid out. In the ensuing treatment with a thin-bed mortar of quality class C2, the tile layers folded back the individual strips and applied the adhesive with a 4-mm toothed trowel. They then placed the sealing and decoupling system in the fresh adhesive bed and carefully carried out parallel laying at intervals of 3 to 5 mm. To bond it securely, they pressed each strip firmly onto the floor using a suitable tool. They then created a seamless connection between the individual strips using “PROBAND” butt-joining tape.
Minimal installation heights of around 2 mm
“The new installation height was therefore only around 2 mm. So all door connections also worked as they did before”, says Frank-Dieter Giske. “We could then lay the tiles.” This was done using the buttering-floating procedure. The thin bed mortar was then applied to the subsurface as well as to the back of the tiles or slabs. “As we laid in large format, the risk of cavitation under the tiles was considerably higher then with smaller formats, and this means the tile flooring could shear off here.” It was therefore necessary for the company carrying it out to distribute the selected adhesive on the floor as well as on the tiling in question. “The PROSECUREfibretec 2.0 is always stuck across the entire surface as well. It therefore reduces the risk of damage by the tile layer to a minimum!”
According to Frank-Dieter Giske, the fully glazed façades are a particular challenge at a car dealership. This means very intensive sunshine all year round. Even in winter. “The display area does not really require heating, but the sun’s rays on the floor lead to a very high thermal load. Then there are the cars that stand upon it and are moved around regularly. These ongoing changes of load are absorbed by PROSECUREfibretec 2.0 without any problem.”
PROSECURE fibretec 2.0 is suitable for higher tractions
Where there are alternations in shape due to changing temperatures, cracks can occur in the subsurface. Depending on the size these may cause static problems in the floor system, which can then lead to the surface covering being damaged. Thanks to its reinforcing function, PROSECURE fibretec 2.0 reliably prevents such damage by counteracting expansion of the cracks at traction of up to 13.8 kN. The glass fibre fabric absorbs tensions, distributes them evenly across the fabric and prevents cracks forming in the surface covering.
With PROSECUREfibretec 2.0. Proline supplies a sealing and decoupling system that forms a laminating bonding bridge for all types of floor coverings thanks to its high level of pressure resistance and flexural strength. It ensures a secure bond with the subsurface, particularly on mixed substrates such as those found in the renovation of old buildings. However, aesthetic surface requirements can be achieved with a minimum of movement when it is used in new buildings too. Butt-joining tape, reinforcement and stabilising fabrics and insulating strips make the sealing and decoupling systems complete.
A total area of 600 square metres was renovated at Premium Mobile Kuntz GmbH in Gettorf. New large-format tiling on fine stoneware (60 x 120 cm in the Maserati area and 100 x 100 cm in the Alfa Romeo section) now decorate the floors of the showrooms and create a completely new ambience for the sports cars. The existing expansion joints in the old flooring have been completely transferred to the new flooring. The building work took around 14 working days with four employees.
- The tensile adhesion strength of 1.2 N/mm² creates an extremely strong layer bonding between the subsurface and the flooring.
- The point loading of 13.09 kN on 4 cm² directs forces coming from above reliably into the subsurface and prevents the formation of cracks.
- The crack bridging of 13.8 kN absorbs tensions and bridges cracks up to a width of 0.5 mm flexural strength
- The flexural strength with a maximum deflection of 1.8 mm at 400,000 cycles (test set-up) compensates static and dynamic deforming forces in concave and convex directions.
- The material thickness of 1.5 mm ensures minimum installation heights.
